The Rook File

Evanston, Illinois

The Rook File has become my personal chess home. I'm retired from direct coaching of beginners and devote most of my time to supporting the Illinois Chess Association and English Springer Rescue America, Inc.

26 September 2010:
Want to see what I'm up to today? Visit http://il-chess.org/ or http://www.evanstonchess.org/. Since becoming president of the Illinois Chess Association, I've devoted much of my time to uniting the chess community in Illinois.

People often lament the lack of support and cohesion in the US chess community. We are not Europe, and we seldom get government support for chess, but there is still much that can be done. There are many people who love the game, believe in its benefits and dedicate their free time to promoting it. The Illinois Chess Association can serve as a uniting forum for their efforts.

During my term in the ICA I have tried to focus on three segments of our chess playing population: titled players, club players, and novices. Titled players represent the pinnacle of the game and deserve our recognition and support. Club players want chess activity and exposure to the top players. Novices and youth players want educational opportunities and a chance to see how far their talents can take them. Our job is to provide a state association that integrates these needs and brings everyone together in one community.

25 November 2008:
Evanston Chess is thriving. We are going to celebrate the holiday season with a double blitz rated tournament. Everyone plays each opponent twice. For details of all our coming events click here.

1 November 2008:
Most of the chess activity on this website has been transferred to Evanston Chess. Come visit us there.
