The single Rook needs protection from his King. The King and Rook form a box that gradually drives the enemy King to the edge of the board.

1.Kc2 Kd5 2.Re1 Kc5 3.Kc3 Kd5 4.Re2 Kc5 5.Rd2 Kc6 6.Kb4 Kb6 7.Rc2 Ka6 8.Ka4 Kb6

The Black King is in the corner of the box but it is White's move, so the Rook wastes a move forcing black to give ground.

9.Rc3 Ka6 10.Rb3 Ka7 11.Ka5 Ka8

White must not play King to a6, that would be stalemate!

12.Kb6 Kb8 13.Rc3 Ka8 14.Rc8# White mates
